On 30 Rock recently the challenge was to just come up with one idea as good as the light bulb. As good as the light bulb??? Yes! That is what we strive toward each day. How can we make a better product at a cheaper price or how can we step out so far from the normal path that we see an entirely new path lain out in front of us.
Good businesses do this in two ways. Trying new things that no one has done successfully and going after the dream with such energy and passion that even if it doesn’t succeed, they learn a lot and that helps them in the future. And if it does succeed? That is where we see true innovative change that will change the industry or even everyday life forever!
Oh, the second way you ask? You! Having the right people is more important than new technology, because without people constantly looking for a better way to do things Innovation and quantum leap changes just don’t occur. The right people make the big projects work, but they also give the company a competitive advantage.
Small changes to improve how your company operates, even things as small as keeping things organized allow the business to reduce waste of finding a needed tool or form. Companies that celebrate the ideas that their team contributes to the company will find that each idea can build on the last and have significant impact on the company as a whole. Ideas, ideas, ideas! Get your team to give their ideas! Make it mandatory. Present them in a meeting or by email or in person – whichever works for you. A company that has 5 employees giving one idea per month has 60 pretty good ideas to help change their business in one year!
All the things that you do to make the job easier, more productive, the product cheaper, or higher quality, or a safer workplace, gives your company a competitive advantage that your competitors don’t have. An idea as good as the light bulb would be great, but even coming up with a protective cage for around that bulb is a great thing!
